Choose your print format
Wedding newspaper sizes: find the right fit before you print.
An A3 sheet, an A4 page and a tabloid newspaper describe different things. This guide separates the size guests hold from the sheet that goes through the printer, so you can choose a format, check your PDF and ask for the right job.
What size should a wedding newspaper be?
Choose by your printing route. For a local print shop, an A3 sheet folds once to A4, and an 11 × 17 in sheet folds to 8.5 × 11 in Letter. For specialist newsprint, Newspaper Club’s Digital Tabloid page is 289 × 380 mm, while PRINTNEWSPAPER’s Tabloid page is 260 × 370 mm. Those are finished page sizes, not the open sheet. Use the exact file for the printer and check a folded proof.

Wedding newspaper size chart: flat sheet versus folded page
A page is one face you read. A sheet is the piece of paper. One sheet printed on both sides and folded once makes four pages. The open sheet is twice the page width, with the same height. Tell your printer both dimensions rather than asking for “an A3 newspaper”.

| Format / route | Open sheet | Page guests hold |
|---|---|---|
| A3 folded once | 420 × 297 mm | A4 · 210 × 297 mm About 8.27 × 11.69 in |
| 11 × 17 in folded once | 17 × 11 in 431.8 × 279.4 mm | Letter · 8.5 × 11 in 215.9 × 279.4 mm |
| A4 folded once | 297 × 210 mm | A5 · 148 × 210 mm nominal About 5.83 × 8.27 in |
| Letter folded once | 11 × 8.5 in | Half Letter · 5.5 × 8.5 in 139.7 × 215.9 mm |
| Newspaper Club Digital Tabloid | 578 × 380 mm | 289 × 380 mm About 11.38 × 14.96 in |
| PRINTNEWSPAPER Tabloid | 520 × 370 mm | 260 × 370 mm About 10.24 × 14.57 in |
A-series sizes use rounded millimetres; half the nominal 297 mm edge is 148.5 mm, while A5 is specified as 148 mm wide. Inch conversions above are rounded. Open newspaper-sheet sizes describe the physical spread, not the PDF size you should upload.
The two newsprint formats are based on Newspaper Club’s Digital Tabloid specification and PRINTNEWSPAPER’s design guide, checked on 27 October 2026. Confirm the selected product’s current requirements before ordering.
Choose a size by how your guests will use the paper
For reading on a ceremony chair or at a table
A4 or Letter is a practical place to start if you are using a local shop: fold an A3 or 11 × 17 in sheet once. Make a blank paper dummy and hold it with your ceremony bag or place it beside a dinner plate. This reveals whether the paper feels comfortable without paying for a sample print.
Choose between A4 and Letter based on your shop’s equipment and the file you have. A4 is a little narrower and taller. Letter is a little wider and shorter. Neither is a direct substitute for the other when a design needs to stay at its intended scale.
For the feel of a real newspaper
A specialist tabloid gives you larger pages and newsprint. Order a sample pack to judge the paper and fold, and use a printed proof of your own design to judge the text. A blank dummy helps with size, but cannot show photo quality or how ink looks on the chosen stock.
Two sizes, held in the same setting
These separate photographs show a smaller folded copy and a larger newsprint copy resting over a lap. The hand and sleeve give a familiar sense of scale. For the A3 fold-and-print route, A3 is the open sheet and A4 is the finished page. Use the size chart for exact dimensions; the camera position varies between photographs.

Size and stock are separate choices. See our photographed comparison of white paper, warm-white paper and newsprint before deciding how you want the finished copy to feel.
For a pocket-sized programme
A5 or Half Letter can work for a short running order with generous type. A dense four-page newspaper shrunk onto these sheets may be hard to read. Rework the content for the smaller format or keep it at A4 or Letter; do not assume a smaller sheet is usable just because the print preview fits.
Vowfold’s ready-arranged fold-and-print files are for A3 and 11 × 17 in sheets. A5 and Half Letter are alternative printing arrangements that need software setup and a separate readability check.
“Tabloid” does not identify one universal size
- Newspaper Club tabloid289 × 380 mm (11.4 × 15 in)
- PRINTNEWSPAPER tabloid260 × 370 mm (10.2 × 14.6 in)
- A4, for scale210 × 297 mm
At a North American copy shop, tabloid can mean an 11 × 17 in sheet. Fold it and the reader holds a Letter-sized page. At Newspaper Club, Digital Tabloid means a 289 × 380 mm page; its open sheet is 578 mm wide. PRINTNEWSPAPER’s Tabloid uses a 260 × 370 mm page.
A useful question is: “Is that the open sheet or the finished page?” Follow it with the actual dimensions. This prevents ordering an 11 × 17 in folded brochure when you expected a much larger newsprint paper.
The two specialist formats also have different proportions. For example, shrinking a 289 × 380 mm page to 260 mm wide scales it to about 90%; its height becomes about 342 mm, leaving space in a 370 mm page. Stretching it instead distorts the photographs and letters. Use a layout made for the destination size.
Check your PDF before sending it to a printer
- Open the actual file you plan to send. A preview image does not tell you a PDF’s physical page dimensions.
- Find its page size. In a PDF viewer, look in document properties or the print preview. Check the units. A3 landscape should be 420 × 297 mm; an 11 × 17 in spread should appear as 17 in wide by 11 in high.
- Count the PDF pages. A four-page reading file has four individual pages. A file already arranged for one folded sheet usually has two PDF pages, one for each side.
- Inspect the thumbnails. Four individual pages should run 1, 2, 3, 4. A ready-arranged four-page fold-and-print file shows 4 | 1 outside and 2 | 3 inside.
- Compare with the order. Product, page dimensions and file arrangement must match the printer’s instructions. Check the upload preview before approving it.
Changing the paper menu does not redesign the file. “Fit” can make a file printable on a different sheet, but also reduces type and changes its margins. A successful upload is useful evidence about file acceptance, not proof that your finished newspaper will be comfortable to read.
Which Vowfold PDF matches each size?
The final download includes five PDF formats of the same four-page newspaper. You choose one for your printing route. The ZIP also contains a usage-guide PDF and an online-reading QR image; those two files are not extra newspaper pages.
| File | PDF page size / arrangement | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Digital-Edition.pdf | A4 portrait Four single pages, 1–4 | Reading, keeping, or printing individual pages on A4. Use Fit for Letter. |
| A3-Fold-and-Print.pdf | 420 × 297 mm landscape Two already-arranged sides | An A3-capable printer; fold once to A4. |
| 11x17-Fold-and-Print.pdf | 17 × 11 in landscape Two already-arranged sides | An 11 × 17 in-capable printer; fold once to Letter. |
| Newspaper-Club-Tabloid.pdf | 289 × 380 mm portrait Four single pages, 1–4 | Newspaper Club Digital Tabloid. |
| PrintNewspaper-Tabloid.pdf | 260 × 370 mm portrait Four single pages, 1–4 | PRINTNEWSPAPER Tabloid. |
For the A3 and 11 × 17 in fold-and-print files, use Actual size / 100%, landscape, one PDF page per side and double-sided short-edge flip. Leave Booklet and multiple-pages-per-sheet settings off: these files already have two newspaper pages on each side. Print one sheet and check that both sides are upright before running the batch; printer drivers can describe duplex settings differently.
For either newspaper printer, send its named file as single pages in reading order. Do not combine it into an open spread. See the delivered file formats or follow the complete printing instructions.
Margins, bleed and type size need their own check
The page size is only the outside boundary. The safe area inside it depends on the printer. Newspaper Club’s Digital Tabloid requires 15 mm clear at the top, bottom and outside edge. PRINTNEWSPAPER specifies 10 mm there. Both request single pages without added bleed or crop marks. See their Digital Tabloid artwork rules and Tabloid file requirements.
A white margin must stay white, including behind page numbers and background tints. For a copy-shop job, ask about the machine’s printable area. Edge-to-edge artwork may require a larger sheet and trimming, which changes the job specification.
Scaling affects every letter: 10 pt type at 90% becomes 9 pt; at 71% it becomes about 7.1 pt. These are arithmetic examples, not recommended font sizes. Read the smallest text, timetable, captions and puzzle clues on a physical proof in ordinary light. If they are difficult, keep the larger format or shorten and reflow the content.
Copy this brief for a local print shop
This example is for the A3 route. For North America, replace the flat size with 17 × 11 in and the finished size with 8.5 × 11 in, and attach the matching file.

Five checks on one folded copy
- Measure it. Check the finished page against the agreed size and look for unexpected shrinkage.
- Turn the pages. Cover 1, inside 2–3, back 4; both sides upright.
- Check the fold. It should sit between the two pages without swallowing words or important parts of photographs.
- Read the small details. Names, travel times, captions and game clues should be usable at normal reading distance.
- Test the QR. Scan the printed result with a phone and check the destination, then approve this same file and specification for the full run.
If the proof fails, identify whether the cause is the source file, scaling, paper feed or folding before changing several settings at once. The home-printing troubleshooting guide helps with an upside-down back, clipped edges and paper problems.
Wedding newspaper size questions
Is A3 the finished size of an A3 wedding newspaper?
It depends on the seller’s terminology. In this guide, A3 fold-and-print means an A3 sheet folded to A4 pages. Ask for both the open and finished dimensions when comparing a template or quote.
Can I print a folded newspaper with an A4 or Letter home printer?
You can make a smaller A5 or Half Letter booklet if software arranges the reading pages for that sheet. It will shrink the layout, so check legibility. To keep Vowfold’s A4 or Letter folded page size, use a printer that accepts A3 or 11 × 17 in, or ask a local shop. You can also print the reading PDF as four separate pages.
Is 11 × 17 in the same as A3?
No. Landscape A3 is 420 × 297 mm; 17 × 11 in is 431.8 × 279.4 mm. The latter is wider and shorter. Choose the matching file instead of using the names interchangeably.
Should I upload spreads to a newspaper printer?
For the two tabloid products covered here, upload single pages in reading order. The printer arranges them onto sheets. Ready-arranged copy-shop PDFs serve a different purpose.
Does a larger size mean we need more content?
No. Use the extra space for comfortable type, photographs and white space. Choose what guests need with the four-page content plan, then adapt the welcome and thank-you wording examples to your available space.
Specifications and editorial checks
